What is the HPV vaccine and why is it recommended?
- The HPV vaccine is used to prevent human papillomavirus infection. This virus is the main cause of diseases such as cervical cancer, anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and genital warts. Vaccination is the most effective primary prevention method against these cancers and diseases, and the World Health Organization recommends it for age-eligible populations.
Who can get the HPV vaccine in Australia?
- Australia's National Immunisation Program provides free vaccination to school students aged 12-13. As an international student, you are generally not eligible for the free program, but people of any age can get vaccinated privately with a doctor's prescription. The benefits are particularly significant for those under 26 and over 45.
What is the approximate cost of the HPV vaccine? Can my OSHC cover it?
- Each dose costs approximately $200-$250 AUD, and 2-3 doses are usually required. The nib student care plan provided on the uniteCare platform covers the HPV vaccine, as well as all vaccines under outpatient medication; nib core does not cover it. ahm and Bupa provide partial coverage for HPV, typically reimbursing no more than AUD 50 per dose (for reference only, subject to actual terms). Medibank provides partial coverage for HPV, typically reimbursing no more than AUD 70 per dose (for reference only, subject to actual terms).
What is the vaccination process?
- 1) Make an appointment with a General Practitioner (GP); 2) The GP consults, assesses, and writes a prescription; 3) Fill the prescription and purchase the vaccine at a pharmacy (some clinics may sell it directly); 4) Return to the clinic for the vaccination (the vaccine needs refrigeration and is generally not suitable to be taken away).
I have already received one dose in my home country. Can I continue with the vaccination schedule in Australia?
- Yes, you can. Please bring your vaccination record from your home country (with a translation) to show the Australian doctor. The doctor will determine the vaccine brand and the number of doses you have already received, and then develop a subsequent vaccination plan for you.
